Initial group to discuss Health Care Reform. Back in 2002, under 60% of rural businesses had health insurance for their employees or for themselves. For the vitality of rural business, more health insurance coverage was needed. More businesses fail because of catastrophic health issues with the owners or key employees.
Action: Utah Health Insurance Exchange was created and is in its first trial year in Utah.
Recommended better bandwidth for rural regions.
Action: Legislation gave GOED $1,000,000 in matching grants to upgrade underserved rural areas.
Recommended Tourism funding increase.
Action: Mayor increase in 2006.
Recommended a way to assist local business expansion.
Action: SB10 allocated a portion of the Industrial Assistance Fund to go to rural areas. Fast Track was created.
Action: The board always recommended more assistance (management, financial, legal, operational) for rural businesses.
Action: Legislature allocated a one time BRC funding of $125,000 of which some was allocated to Cedar City.
Recommended a closer relationship with rural colleges and the Center of Excellence Program.
Supported the Annual Diversified Agriculture Conference.
Action: Conference has been held annually since 2003.
Advocated for distressed rural areas.
Action: the Business Development for Disadvantaged Rural Communities Program. It was funded once in 2004 and not funded since.
