Announcing the Global City Team Challenge

Pete CodellaBroadband

global2The National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) has teamed with US Ignite to provide the Global City Teams Challenge. This challenge aims to advance technology in the direction of developing smart cities/communities.

The challenge is open to any organization or individual across the globe willing to participate in a team on a voluntary basis. These teams are to collaborate across industry and develop Internet of Things (IoT) projects. The projects should be linked to developing a smart city. All projects should be able to be replicated and should provide a foundation for other cities/communities to adopt.

Requirements for participation are: two involved entities, a site location and a project idea.  There is no cost to participate.  Also, there is no guaranteed funding.  There are many involved sponsors. Interested parties will be connected to those sponsors.  Participation in the event can provide an opportunity to showcase a city/community as forward thinking and to develop public-private partnerships within cities/communities.

Upcoming events for the Global City Teams Challenge are:

  • Winter 2015 (February) – Tech-jam:  An opportunity to present the project and get feedback from other involved teams.
  • June 2015 – Global City Team Festival:  Present completed project to other participants
  • Potential regional meetings
  • Potential Q&A followup webinars

Current partners include the National Science Foundation (NSF), Department of Transportation (DOT), Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), IBM, Intel, Qualcomm, Cisco, Juniper Networks, Extreme Networks and Arm Holdings.
