R&D Funding Through NIH SBIR-STTR Programs; Utah Workshop Held Nov. 6

Pete CodellaUtah Innovation Center

The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) SBIR-STTR Omnibus grant solicitations are open to small businesses to submit technology ideas with public health relevance. The Utah Industry and Innovation Center is presenting a virtual workshop November 6 to help Utah companies navigate the process and prepare a successful proposal.

HHS participating agencies include the National Institutes of Health (NIH, SBIR and STTR), Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC, SBIR only), and the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA, SBIR only). The next submission deadline is January 5, with additional deadlines expected April 5 and September 5, 2021.

Interested applicants should speak with a HHS SBIR-STTR program manager before submitting an application, and sending the proposed project’s Specific Aims is encouraged. Program managers will discuss the Institute or Center’s interest in the proposed technology and can offer application-specific advice. Registering for the Utah Industry and Innovation Center’s workshop will guide you through this process.

NIH applications proposing Specific Aims that meet NIH’s definition of a clinical trial must be submitted to a funding opportunity announcement that is specific to clinical trials. As such, there are four SBIR/STTR Omnibus parent solicitations, which are divided into SBIR and STTR, and then Clinical Trial Not Allowed and Clinical Trial Required:

SBIR Omnibus/Parent Clinical Trial Not Allowed Funding Opportunity Announcement (PA-20-260)
STTR Omnibus/Parent Clinical Trial Not Allowed Funding Opportunity Announcement (PA-20-265)
SBIR Omnibus/Parent Clinical Trial Required Funding Opportunity Announcement (PA-20-262)
STTR Omnibus/Parent Clinical Trial Required Funding Opportunity Announcement (PA-20-261)

Some NIH topics are approved for awards over statutory budget limits, listed at the back of the Omnibus.

Should you find a topic and intend to submit a proposal, the Utah Industry and Innovation Center can review the Specific Aims prior to sending as well as provide guidance throughout the application process. Schedule a consultation by emailing innovationutah@utah.gov or selecting a time during Office Hours.
