The Governor’s Utah Economic Summit 2012 featured a panel titled “Gigabit Communities: Why Utah is a Leader.” John Njord, Executive Director of the Utah Department of Transportation (UDOT) moderated the two-member panel of Spencer Cox, Vice President and General Counsel of CentraCom Interactive, and Vance Checketts, Vice President of EMC Corporation.

John Njord discussed UDOT’s unique model of facilitating cooperative fiber and conduit trades with broadband providers which has expanded broadband infrastructure into remote areas of the State.

Vance Checketts focused on the increasing need for bandwidth and storage and emphasized that Utah is in a unique position to meet these needs and attract high tech businesses.

Spencer Cox gave examples of rural communities who have attracted technology-based businesses by marketing the availability broadband in their communities.
