Recipients of Governor’s Medals for Science and Technology Announced
Seven individuals to be recognized for their contributions to science and technology

Salt Lake City, UTAH – Governor Gary R. Herbert and the State Science Advisor, Dr. Carol Lynn George, along with the State Advisory Council on Science and Technology will award the Governor’s Medals for Science and Technology to seven individuals in an awards ceremony that will be held in the Leonardo Museum on Wednesday, January 15, 2014.

“Advances in science and technology play a huge role in keeping Utah dynamic and competitive,” said Governor Herbert. “On behalf of the State of Utah, I commend these individuals for their work in their respective fields and thank them for their contributions to this great State.”

The Governor’s Office of Economic Development (GOED) and the State Science Office award medals to science and technology leaders who have improved the lives of people in the state and nation through their research and/or years of service.

Governor’s Science Medals are presented in the categories of academics, science education, industry and government. A list of 2013 award recipients and the categories they were nominated for can be found below:

The Governor’s Medal award program was initiated in 1987. Nominations are reviewed by the State’s Science Advisory Council before formally presenting winners to the Governor. Full bios and photos for 2013 awardees can be found at the end of this release.

Jason Dunn is the executive officer of IM Flash Technologies, LLC, responsible for co-leading the joint venture between Intel Corporation and Micron Technology, Inc. Mr. Dunn has been with the joint venture since start-up in 2006, and was the original process engineering manager responsible for the fab start-up and tool qualification in the Lehi facility. Jason first joined Micron in 2000 as a visiting professor to develop an Ion Implantation Theory course and then joined full-time in 2001. Mr. Dunn has held numerous leadership roles in manufacturing operations, including ion implantation and diffusion section manager, process engineering manager, fab manager and site director.

Keyvan Esfarjani

Keyvan Esfarjani is an Intel vice president in the Technology & Manufacturing Group and executive officer of IM Flash Technologies, LLC, responsible for co-leading the joint venture between Intel Corporation and Micron Technology, Inc. Prior to joining IM Flash Technologies, he was a director in the Intel Technology Manufacturing Engineering organization. Mr. Esfarjani has held various engineering and manufacturing leadership roles. The expertise he gained through these roles prepared him to be involved in the startup of 12 technology companies.

In 2002 Aloysius S. Church was selected by Governor Mike Leavitt to be the principal of the Academy for Math, Engineering and Science (AMES), which was the first STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) focused early college high school in the state. AMES supports students in their pursuit of science related fields with an active and award winning science fair program and elective courses, initiated under Al’s leadership, that include geology, astronomy, science through science fiction, engineering foundations and animation. He now serves as a resource for current leadership and works as an adjunct instructor at the University of Utah in the College of Education where he teaches prospective principals and teachers the importance of enacting programs for under-served students.

Tamara Goetz

Tamara Goetz was appointed by Governor Jon M. Huntsman, Jr. as State Science Advisor in August of 2007. During her tenure with the state, Ms. Goetz was the lead on Utah’s U.S. Department of Labor’s Workforce Innovation in Regional Economic Development Initiative, which promoted education and training for life sciences in Utah. She also helped to launch the State’s first STEM education and workforce initiative that led to the creation of the STEM Action Center. She recently joined Utah Valley University as assistant dean for External Relations in the College of Science and Health.

Larry Grandia is an accomplished CIO veteran of the healthcare IT industry with more than 40 years of business and technology leadership experience. Mr. Grandia helped expand the early systems at LDS Hospital into a critical infrastructure supporting world-class patient care that became an industry model for high-quality, low-cost care. Under his leadership, more than 20 Intermountain hospitals implemented strong financial, administrative and clinical health IT systems. Now retired, Mr. Grandia formerly served in c-level positions at Premier, Inc, DAOU Systems, Inc. and Intermountain Healthcare, Inc. Mr. Grandia has received numerous professional recognitions over the course of his career. Most recently, he was presented with the 50 in 50 award.


Larry Rigby

Over the past 40 years, Larry Rigby has founded eight medical device and pharmaceutical companies in Utah. He has served as president, chairman and CEO respectively. Mr. Rigby’s companies, many of which were spinouts from the University of Utah, have raised tens of millions of dollars and have created hundreds of jobs in Utah. A true renaissance man, Mr. Rigby is the holder of seven patents, is in the process of writing his second novel, speaks fluent German, reads French and is a skilled painter. He serves as a mentor to many up and coming innovators and entrepreneurs and has been a contributing cornerstone of the life science industry in Utah for several decades.

Henry S. White, a professor in the Chemistry Department at the University of Utah, is a world leader in electro¬chemical systems used in energy storage and biomedical applications. Professor White and his students developed novel sensors capable of analyzing single molecules of DNA, invented new approaches to delivering drugs through skin, and designed 3-D electrochemical energy storage systems with extremely high power density. Professor White has published over 200 peer-reviewed scientific publications and patents in the fields of electro¬chemistry, nanomaterials, sensors, and analytical chemistry. He has been recognized by numerous international awards for his outstanding research and is an associate editor of the Journal of the American Chemical Society.

Dr. Kenneth L. White led the research that resulted in the first live births of equine “cloned” animals that was published in Science and brought international recognition to Utah State University (USU) in 2003. Because of his work, Popular Science ranked USU in the “Top 10 Geek Universities” in 2008. His research successfully applied “cloning” to produce higher carcass quality in beef cattle, and also produced animals that enabled the study of human diseases previously unavailable for study in conventional animal models. Currently vice president for USU Extension, dean of the College of Agriculture and Applied Sciences, and director of the Utah Agricultural Experiment Station at Utah State University, Dr. White is credited as the primary individual responsible for the establishment of the USU School of Veterinary Medicine.
