The Utah Broadband Project’s May 2013 map of the month displays Utah’s populated areas with broadband coverage areas for 3 different levels of service.
The data sources are residential and mobile broadband service areas (blue), at different speed classes, as reported by broadband providers for Winter 2013, and “Utah Populated Areas” (red) that the Project’s mapping team created by trimming the populated 2010 census blocks to fit actual residential areas visible on 2011 area photography.
Service Level Definitions:
Basic Consumer Broadband:
Residential availability of at least 3 Mbps download and 768 Kbps upload. Allows for basic broadband internet functionality, such as browsing webpages and checking email.
Home Office/Entertainment Broadband:
Residential availability of at least 10 Mbps download and 3 Mbps upload. Allows for basic functionality, plus video streaming and photo upload and download.
High Capacity Broadband:
Availability of at least 25 Mbps download and 10 Mbps upload. These speeds allow for broadband internet needed for residential and small businesses with high volume data usage.
Note:
These maps do not included services that are advertised primarily to commercial customers. Also, many populated areas do have access to broadband services where the download speeds fit the higher capacity criteria, but are not included as being covered, because their upload speeds do not fit the criteria.
