To determine where Americans are the most self-reliant, despite coronavirus, WalletHub compared the 50 states based on five dependency sources: consumer finances, the government, the job market, international trade, and personal vices.
The detailed report broke down categories into 39 key indicators of independence to determine which states are most self-sustaining. Each metric was graded on a 100-point scale, with 100 representing the highest level of independence.
Utah was ranked the No. 1 most independent state.
