During his address at the annual Utah Life Science Summit, Gov. Gary R. Herbert today announced the Utah Medical Innovations Pathways (MIP) program has expanded to four additional school districts.

“Pathways programs are an important step in addressing the state’s workforce challenges,” Gov. Herbert said. “I commend the life science industry leaders who have stepped up to support this program and secure Utah’s role as a world-class hub for medical innovation.”

The MIP program, which launched last September, was piloted in Granite School District. It has now expanded to four additional districts: Canyons, Davis, Jordan and Tooele. Today, the program is supported by 10 industry partners including Edwards Lifesciences, Merit Medical, Nelson Labs and BD Medical.

MIP connects high school students with the science, engineering, and technology skills necessary for a career in life science fields. MIP students have the opportunity to participate in job shadowing with one of the ten companies in the program. After students complete the training, they graduate high school with a certificate in medical innovations, and earn a guaranteed interview with participating companies. MIP was made possible by unprecedented partnerships between industry and education.
