Utah Office of Outdoor Recreation Awards 2016 Infrastructure and Youth Program Funding

SALT LAKE CITY (Nov. 10, 2016)—The Office of Outdoor Recreation and Governor’s Office of Economic Development (GOED) are pleased to announce the completion of the 2016 round of the Utah Outdoor Recreation Grant.

“The Outdoor Recreation grant program increases access to outdoor recreation opportunities, makes recreation more sustainable and ultimately helps Utah residents enjoy our state’s many natural assets,” said Val Hale, executive director of GOED. “We look forward to seeing these projects take shape as we support our local communities.”

The GOED Board approved $929,815 in grants supporting outdoor recreation infrastructure and youth programs across 31 applicants in 14 counties. In 2016, the grant saw 300 percent growth in applications. Total requested project value from applicants topped $13 million with 70 percent of the final approved grant funds supporting rural counties. The top five funded infrastructure requests include multi-use paths, special needs, off-highway vehicles, boating and climbing. Mountain biking, multi-activity, skiing, snowboarding and special needs were the top five youth programs funded.

“The Utah Outdoor Recreation Grant is an important tool to promote an active and healthy lifestyle for all Utahns,” said Tom Adams, director of the Office of Outdoor Recreation. “The grant is Utah’s only statewide resource dedicated to supporting outdoor recreation by establishing infrastructure and youth outdoor education programs. These programs not only keep our youth healthy and active but also show our kids what it means to be good stewards for future generations.”
