American Pacific Corporation (AMPAC), a leading manufacturer of specialty chemicals serving the aerospace and defense industries, recently announced the groundbreaking of its Capacity Expansion Project in Cedar City, Utah.

This landmark investment represents a $100 million capital commitment to strengthen Utah’s role as a hub for advanced aerospace and defense manufacturing. AMPAC’s event follows the recent approval of a Rural Economic Development Tax Increment Financing (REDTIF) incentive by the Utah Governor’s Office of Economic Opportunity.

“The aerospace and defense industry is vital to Utah’s economy and our nation’s security,” said Jefferson Moss, executive director of the Governor’s Office of Economic Opportunity. “American Pacific is a prime example of how Utah fuels global innovation. From rocket propulsion to clean fire suppression technologies, its specialty materials support aerospace, defense, and critical industries while creating long-term prosperity for Utahns.”

The expansion underscores American Pacific Corporation’s long-standing partnership with the U.S. Department of Defense and reinforces its dedication to innovation, national security, and local economic development. Once complete, the project will significantly increase production capabilities, ensuring that AMPAC continues to meet the growing needs of critical defense and aerospace programs.

“This groundbreaking is more than a construction milestone — it’s a commitment to our workforce, our community, and our nation’s defense infrastructure,” said David Johnson, economic development director for Cedar City and Iron County. “This investment not only enhances our ability to support the Department of Defense but also fuels economic growth right here in southern Utah.”

The project is expected to generate substantial economic impact for the region, including new high-quality jobs, expanded manufacturing capacity, and strengthened supply chain resilience. AMPAC’s decision to grow its operations in Cedar City reflects the region’s unique advantages, including a skilled workforce, supportive community partners, and strategic proximity to key defense customers.

Kris Griffith, president of AMPAC, said: “I am excited about this anticipated investment. Our customers are investing to increase solid rocket motor manufacturing capacity to keep pace with the rising global demand for missile production and space launch. This anticipated investment by AMPAC demonstrates our commitment to invest alongside our commercial partners in support of these important initiatives with national security implications.”

Local and state leaders, along with industry stakeholders, gathered at the Cedar City facility to commemorate the groundbreaking and tour the expansion site. The event marks the beginning of a new chapter for AMPAC and its role in advancing Utah’s reputation as a leader in aerospace and defense innovation.
