The Utah Education Network (UEN) was asked to present the details of its Digital Media Management Plan at the White House’s first Education Datapalooza event on October 9, 2012. Katie Garrett, the Digital Media Project Coordinator at UEN, presented on the network’s efforts to make digital media more accessible to educators. UEN houses eMedia, which is a vast depository of digital images, videos, teacher’s guides, animations, and audio files, which can be downloaded for educational use.
Using eMedia, educators can use keywords to search the repository but UEN plans to organize the materials so teachers can access files that specifically support Utah’s Common Core State Standards. UEN also plans to integrate these educational materials into the LearningRegistry, which is national platform, designed to bring various digital collections in one place. “We have island of content and there is currently no safe place for teachers to put their content,” said Garrett. “Our plan is to create a safe harbor and bridges that connect those pieces of content to one place.”
Education Datapalooza was created to highlight innovators and entrepreneurs who are using freely available data to build products, services, and apps with the potential to advance educational achievement.
